Elementary school.  Junior High School.  High School.  Pedophiles to the right of us.  Pedophiles to the left of us. Pedophiles all around us.  They are everywhere like a new Biblical plague upon our children.

From Los Angeles to New York and small towns in between, such as Happy Valley Pennsylvania, there is a growing number of incidents of pedophilia involving educators at every level.  In the old days, it seemed that pedophilia was limited an uncle or other unnoticed relative much like the notorious Uncle Ernie in the WHO’s rock opera Tommy.

At a time when serial killers have multiplied in our society, it seems like the number of pedophiles has multiplied exponentially.  One steals your child away while the other leaves them shattered much like dropping a fragile tea cup off a six-foot wall.

According to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, pedophilia is defined as a psychiatric disorder in adults or late adolescents (persons age 16 or older) typically characterized by a primary or exclusive sexual interest in prepubescent children (generally age 13 years or younger, though onset of puberty may vary). The child must be at least five years younger than the adolescent (16 or older) to be termed pedophilia.  The majority are men.

Many others define pedophilia as a person who has intense and recurrent sexual urges’ toward and fantasies about prepubescent children and on which feelings they have either acted upon, or which cause distress or interpersonal difficulty.

The word pedophilia originates from the Greek words paidos, meaning “child,” and philia, meaning “love.”  It is sad that the words love and child joined together bring about a heinous mental illness that undermines the two words.

Historians have long speculated that prominent figures, including Saint Augustine (354–430), Muhammad (570–632) and Gandhi (1869–1948), who publicly enjoyed the company of young children and may have had sexual relations with them.  A disgusting thought that, if proved, would tarnish their reputations beyond repair.

Many forget that Cleopatra was only 12-years-old when she assumed the throne and engaged in sex with Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony.  And, throughout history, women routinely married between the ages of 13 and 14, often sold by their families against their wishes.  In terms of sexual contact, it was open season on the young, regardless of sex, until the last 60 years.

Society ignored pedophilia until the late 19th century.  Before then it was the province of mentally ill kings and rulers.  The first British and American surveys of sexual child abuse began in the 1920s with more substantial surveys starting in the 1950s.  In the summer of 1996, more than 250,000 people marched in the streets of Brussels against child abuse and pedophilia.

On Sunday’s show we are going to tackle the Sandusky case in Pennsylvania and the Miramonte School case in Los Angeles.  The Sandusky case is going to trial (barring delays) on May 14, 2012.  The Miramonte school scandal is still developing with another arrest earlier this week.

It is striking to see the ages of some of the alleged pedophiles.  Sandusky is in his late sixties while the teachers in the Miramonte scandal are in their thirties and forties.

Does this mean that the accused football coach Sandusky has been a pedophile for more than forty years and no one noticed?  Or, did he suddenly become one when lightning struck him?

Do the recent revelations mean that the accused teacher Mark Brendt has been acting out pedophilia since he became a teacher?  Or, did someone put something in the water at the Miramonte School that changed him like a bad character in a Hollywood “B” movie?

Over the length of the Sandusky and Brendt cases, Barling & Barrett will explore the murky world of pedophiles with guests for varying opinions and viewpoints.  Join the story and call in with your questions and opinions.

Come one, come all to our Sunday Show at 4 PM EST, 3 PM CST and 1 PM PST. To listen live please use this link.
