The Bahamas’ immigration minister has resigned after pictures surfaced showing him on bed with former Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith.

According to, Shane Gibson resigned Sunday night and apologized for any embarrassment he may have caused the Bahamian people.

“I want to apologize to all persons who may in any way have been offended by anything that I have said, done, or perceived to have said or done,” Gibson said on television. “To the extent that my beloved country has in any way suffered from anything that I was perceived to have said or done, I want to apologize to the Bahamian people as a whole.”

Despite the pictures, which were printed on Feb. 12 in The Tribune of Nassau, Gibson, who “fast-tracked” Smith’s application for residency, says he did nothing wrong and never had a sexual relationship with Smith. In the pictures, both were clothed and Gibson was embracing Smith.

Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie accepted Gibson’s resignation.

“However sad Shane’s decision to resign may be, I also believe, as does he, that it is the correct course of action for him to take in all of the circumstances,” Christie said.

Smith died on Feb. 8 in a hotel room in Hollywood, Fla. She claimed that she owned a water-front mansion in the Bahamas, but that is being disputed. Her lawyers have said South Carolina developer G. Ben Thompson gave Smith the house as a gift, which Thompson denies.

Smith’s body was embalmed over the weekend, but remains in a Broward County, Fla., judge’s custody until a decision is made in a legal battle over where she is to be buried. Smith’s attorney and partner, Howard K. Stern, wants her buried in the Bahamas next to her son, which is where he says she wanted to be buried. Her mother, Vergie Arthur, wants her buried in Texas.
