It has recently been reported that asbestos is to be removed from a site in the Texas area. The site was formerly that of the Longhorn Ammunition Plant and is in Karnack, Texas. When the plant was built, in the early 1940s, asbestos was a very widely used material, as the dangers of exposure to it were not then widely known.

However, it is now known that asbestos can cause a range of health problems through long term or high level exposure, and this includes a form of cancer known as mesothelioma.

The use of asbestos was regulated in the 1970s when the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was formed. It was then known that exposure to asbestos could cause a range of serious and even deadly health problems.

At present it is only the power and boiler house on the site that required asbestos abatement to be carried out. The report states that the Environmental Chemical Corp has been taken on to deal with the removal of asbestos from the Texas site.
