It is not everyday that you get to talk to someone that is not only an author, but also a publisher. Don Bracken is that guy. The History Publishing Company is small, but incredibly influential. I first heard of HPC via a press release, I am by no means an expert on the Cold War, but it is a subject that I have read a great deal about. The press release touted the release of a new book, one that would cause history books used in schools to be rewritten, and author James Heaphey was right! The history books claim that the A-Bomb made it to Morocco in the mid fifties, not so, early fifties is the new officially released government documents, and James Heaphey was right there. Legerdemain is a must read for any Cold War armchair warrior.

My next foray into HPC was a book actually written by Don Bracken about the Civil War. But this was no regular historical look rehashing what other historians had written, instead, Don went to the newspaper archives. A newspaper from the north, and a newspaper from the south. Two very different views of what was going on. Words Of War takes the reader on an exploration of 18 significant battles and how each was viewed by the opposing side. A great study in propaganda.

Also in the HPC catalog are two books by ex FBI honchos Terry Turchie and Kathleen Pucket, Hunting The American Terrorist takes us behind the scenes in the hunt for the Unabomber, while Homeland Insecurity takes a long hard look at some well known politicians and chronicles how their addiction to power has adversely affected the entire security of the country.

HPC in my mind represents the very best in an independent publishing house.

I have always enjoyed talking with Don Bracken, he is an engaging and interesting man. So it was a great pleasure to have him as a guest on the radio. We covered a lot of ground in 30 minutes. From the state of the publishing industry today, and what an author must do to succeed, to HPC’s current and future catalog. You can listen to the entire interview here, and you can also find out how Blogger News has scooped the BBC!

You can get more information about all of the books we discuss on the History Publishing Company web site.
