Frantic requests and apologies by the Jharkhand Policemen’s Association stopped Home Secretary Sudhir Tripathy from walking out of its convention after Association General Secretary Chandragupta Singh sought to criticise Chief Minister Madhu Koda for not attending the convention.Tripathy, who got up and headed towards the exit when Singh continued with his criticism of the Chief Minister, returned to his seat after half-a-dozen senior office-bearers of the Association pleaded with him not to go while cutting short the the General Secretary’s speech midway.

The Chief Minister could not attend the convention as he had to catch a flight to New Delhi at around the same time, according to official sources.

In his short speech, Director General of Police J B Mahapatra, apologised to Tripathy on the stage erected in the policelines here.

“I did not move when the Home Secretary got up, because I did not like to insult you…The Home Secretary would not have returned if I too got up,” Mahapatra, who was the special guest, said.

“One should remember that Police Association is a Service Union and not not a Trade Union,” the DGP said adding one should not criticise anyone on such a forum.

Pulling up for skipping the daily parade in the policelines, the top police officer emphasised on wearing uniform.

Mahapatra, however, assured the Association that he would reccommend its demands to the government.
