Following quick on the heels of a joke about incompetent Filippino doctors comes a real insult in the name of comedy:

Jon Stewart’s show, in a discussion of female presidents, flashed up a photo of our beloved ex president Corey Acquino, with the caption: Slut.

“Whoever put that graphic has a sick mind. Why would [they] do that to a revered democratic icon all over the world, known very much for her clean living and religious life?” Sytangco told ABS-CBN’s morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda.”

One must of course put this into the context of liberal US Television, where the other female presidents (such as Golda Meir and Margaret Thatcher) are on the conservative side of politics, and therefore fair game to be ridiculed.

But why President Acquino, who lost her husband when he volunteered to run against the Marcos dictatorship, and then courageously took up the banner to run herself, risking her life in the aftermath when the People Power revolution?

Such a slur can only be attributed to a racism that sees Asian women as potential prostitutes.

Isn’t it strange that when a radio commentator made a joke about the promiscuous reputation of minority cheerleaders, he was fired, but a major American comic can ridicule a good woman, the point of the joke is that she is attractive and Asian and therefore must be sexually promiscuous, and no one even hesitates about airing the show (which, unlike Imus, was taped in advance).

The real contrast can be seen in Cory’s reaction to the slur:

“My mom only wishes to convey that she will include those who made this video in her prayers,” said Aquino, son and namesake of Philippine martyr Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

Now, that’s a threat that is really dangerous.

As James comments: The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

If I were rich and famous and made my fortune ridiculing good people, I wouldn’t welcome a righteous woman praying that I would convert my life to holiness.
