News Item:
New search sought for bird

Louisiana is seeking specialized federal funding, but not for hurricane relief.  Seems there’s this bird that they really want to find.  The critter in question is an ivory-billed woodpecker, not that long ago thought to be extinct, but in 1999 a hunter in Arkansas shot some video of what the bird folks believe to be one, and the hunt has been on ever since.

The last official documented sighting happened to be in Louisiana, in 1944.  Consensus is, if it was there then, it will be there now.  The extra money is being requested for helicopters and planes to do aerial reconnaissance in hurricane damaged areas where searchers can’t get in on foot.
