Ben Stiller’s latest movie, The Heartbreak Kid, came out this last weekend with a less than stellar performance (It failed to top the box office, losing out on that title to the latest film by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson). It is beginning to look as though the Farrelly Brothers’ newest movie will have a lackluster month or so in theaters. However, all is not lost. There is still the Heartbreak Kid soundtrack.Normally the soundtrack for a movie is an afterthought, something they throw together to make a little extra money and to keep the recording industry in clothes for one more week. Sometimes it’s bad bands or washed up tunes we’ve already heard on car commercials for two years. Yet there are some movies which have an incredible soundtrack and The Heartbreak Kid is certainly one of those.

The Flaming Lips, Buva, and David Bowie all contribute two songs each to this fourteen track album released by Plan R Soundtracks. Also making an appearance is World Party, Matthew Sweet, Susanna Hoffs, The Weepies, Ozomatli, Brian Hyland, Julieta Venegas, and Amy Lavere.

The strongest track on the entire album is the first, “The Tale of the Horny Frog” by The Flaming Lips. A lilting and light-hearted tale about love and what it can do to each and every one of us. The entire album is a ode to love and what comes about when it all goes wrong. It’s an tour-de-force of heartbreak, emotion, and lots of humor in the mix.

And so this soundtrack is perhaps the greatest part of the entire Ben Stiller movie. Go out and buy it. It’s worth the price.
