Jan and I want to wish you all the very best this holiday season.
I read a book yesterday about celebrating Christmas, it was written from a Christian position, and essentially said that while this time of year is a joyous occasion it is also a time of refection. Coming on the heels of the Winter Solstice it represents not just the birth of Jesus, but rather the rebirth of the planet. The sun starts to rise higher in the sky each day, and the daylight hours grow longer. It is a time to reflect upon the year past, and look toward the year coming.
This Christmas represents not just the end of 2009, but the end of the first decade of this century. At this time of year 10 years ago we were facing the dawn of the year 2000, many wondered if the world was going to be plunged into electronic chaos, the infamous Y2K bug. We survived! It did however serve to bring into focus our ever increasing reliance on technology.
Looking back over the past decade, I can think of few notable high spots, and many low ones. Wars have and indeed still are raging. The disparity between the have’s and have not’s is just as wide, if not wider than ever before.
2009 has been a heart wrenching year for Jan and I. Our decision to cover some of missing children stories that we felt should get more media attention has resulted in many tears being shed. It has also resulted in us making many new friends, friendships that will endure. For that we are eternally grateful.
What will 2010 bring? we don’t know, but we do hope and pray that it will bring peace and understanding.
So from our family to yours, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.
