Still another ...

... prisoner has been released from a life-sentence thanks to the work of the Innocence Project.

A judge freed the 45-year-old Crotzer after DNA testing and other evidence convinced prosecutors he was not involved in the 1981 armed robbery and rapes that led to his 130-year prison sentence.

"It's been a long time coming," said Crotzer, his black hair graying at the temples. "Thank God for this day."

As of January 24th, the Project has exonerated 173 wrongly-convicted prisoners — 14 of them on Death Row. Surely, there are a great many more innocent men sitting in prison, and some of them are awaiting execution.

I've no philosophical objection to the death penalty, but I don't see how its continuance can be justified in the face of these numbers. Clearly, there is something seriously amiss in the nation's courthouses, and executions should cease until we have figured out what it is and fixed it, and the criteria governing application of the death penalty have been revisited.
