A special unit of Iran’s Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution called the Quds Force has been cited as a major contributing factor to the continued violence in Iraq.

It has been known for some time that the Quds have been operating within Iraq, but recent intelligence reports have now answered the lingering question of whether these units operations are known and sanctioned by Iran’s government.

The answer, according to Brigadier-General Kevin Bergner, is yes.

While Iran does not acknowledge the existence of the Quds Force, western military intelligence experts and some exiled Iranians say it is a wing of Iran’s ideologically driven Revolutionary Guards.

They say it reported directly to Iran’s top authority, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Ideologies and religions aside, the Quds Force appears to bring material aid and training to insurgents, not unlike the standing mission of the US Special Forces.

According to Reuters, Bergner outlined several attacks he believes that the Quds Force was behind; including an infiltration raid where Qud- trained commandos wore American uniforms, carried American weapons, and spoke English, tricking their way through checkpoints to kidnap several American soldiers for later execution.

Iran denies the accusations as outright lies, but Bergner’s intelligence shows several training camps near Tehran where Iraqi Shi’ites have been trained by the Qud.

Israeli intelligence also claims that Qud Force supports both Hezbolla and Hamas.

With the latest news speculations about spectacular summer attacks in the US, and stifled intelligence about the types of attacks (public schools) that are likely to happen, it’s good to know that we’ve at least figured out what’s going on in Iraq.
