Fidel Castro temporarily hands power to his brother Raul

August 1, 2006 President Fidel Castro of Cuba has handed power, including over the military forces, to his brother Raul. Mr Fidel Castro is undergoing intestinal surgery and is temporarily unable to govern. Raul is the Vice-President of Cuba and number two in the Party. Fidel Castro is 79 years old and has ruled since the 1959 revolution, while Raul is 75. The power change was reported on Cuban television Monday night Cuban time.

It is reported that US interests in Cuba await Fidel Castro's death so that a more serious change can be caused on the island. Story]

It is said that if certain circumstances permitted Raul to govern for a few months Cuba will be on a straight path for an organized democracy. There has also been rumors about Fidel's health, but this is the first major instant that has been reported by major news sources.
