By Sekouba Jadama, Banjul, profiles new IGP Benedict Jammeh

Dear Editor, I must of all thank you and your very determined reporters for updating Gambians on developments. True, Musa Mboob was sacked as the IGP and an unknown Officer in the name of Benedict Jammeh was appointed to replace him. Ben, as he is popularly known was born in Kanilai in 1959 and a Christian by faith, and Educated at the Gambia High School and joined the then Field Force in 1980.He was detained after the Kukoi Samba Sanyang Coup for several months and later dismissed by the Jawara Government. Ben took up teaching and later enrolled in the University Extension Program and he was among the first batch of graduates of the extension program. He was later appointed as a teacher at Gambia high School and in 1999,he was re- enlisted in to the Gambia Police Force as an ASP and attached to the Administration during the time of Rex King. When Rex was sacked and Sankung Badjie took over, Ben decided to use the State House connection and opted for a degree course when Therese Drammeh was the Permanent Secretary of the Interior. Funds were not available but instructions were the let the Police vote be used to pay for him. Ben got admission at the Manchester University to study Law and all the Police training votes for 6 years were spent on Ben and no other officer had benefited from training because Ben was the only beneficiary to the vote. The PMO at one point decided to stop funding him[ let them denied], the sponsorship continue all the way from Sankung’s time to Sonko because no one has got the guts to stop for almost 6 years doing one degree programme. Let any IGP deny this. What the IG’s then decided to do was to deny him promotions because they felt that he was not doing well for 6 years. However, Ben knew that the post of IG was waiting for him and he decided to stay in the UK until such a time that it’s ripe for him to return home. During his first period in the Field Force, he was always in the Barracks and his second coming, he was confined in the Headquarters and he has never had any experience as a season Police Officer. He has never complied a case file and therefore, it is an other mess to appoint him as IG,but this may not be a big deal hence Yahya once appointed a fitter as IG. Sonko has mess the Police and I can assure you Ben will mess it more than Sonko did, the womanizer who as again impregnated a wpc recently. Jammeh has reduced the Police as a Jola Institution given his recent appointments. I do not agree with him when he said that Promotions will be based on merits. NO and a definite No. Now, do not be surprised when the next Deputy is a Jola in the name of Edward Sambou, who cannot even spell his name rightly. A graduate of St Theresa’s Junior Secondary School and a former accounts clerk in the Gendermerie, who rose through the ranks to the position of Commissioner of Police. Can you imagine. There are several officers in the Police who can man the position of IG and beyond, but these officers are marginalized and they decided to take low profile in the system for fear of been victimized. I think Jammeh should take a closer look at the Police and put the right people in the right places. Ben called Musa shortly when he was appointed in November to congratulate him on his appointment and Musa told him clearly that he was just waiting for him. Ben to come take over the Office. This is when Ben decided to come home and after almost 40 days,Musa was sacked. What a pity for him. He did nothing wrong to warrant his sacking, but most officers were not surprised to this development. Ben was an ASP, until his appointment and second in command of the Prosecution Division of the Police. This is for the benefit of esteem readers who do not know Benedict Jammeh the new IGP of the Gambia Police Force. All rights reserved.
