The first state witness in the trial of Ms Fatou Jaw Manneh over allegations of publishing seditious materials was last Friday reminded that the court is not a place for glorifying President Jammeh and his much-hyped achievements in development term.As the legal battle continued last Friday at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, the counsel for Ms Manneh informed the witness that he was brought in to tell the court what he knew about the case and not the otherwise. The state witness, who apparently digressed in his evidence by eulogizing Mr. Jammeh for what he called his accomplishments in the area of development, was told by the defense counsel that the honourable court is not a political ground and what was of relevance to the court were the charges.

Earlier on, the state witness had, in his testimony, gone out of his way by telling the court that Jammeh’s achievements in the development sphere in the past years are overwhelming and breathtaking. He informed the court that Jammeh was in fact a man full of positive energy and that he saw no truth in the accused’s assertion in the ‘publication’ that the Gambia leader is a bundle of terror, tearing the beloved Gambia to shreds.
The witness pointed out that Jammeh was elected as head of state in three successive successful elections and that he was not aware of any betrayal on the part of the president.

“Since 1994 to date, I have not seen anything that has torn and is tearing our country to shreds. I am also not in the knowledge that the president is a thorn in the flesh of every issue that relate to development in The Gambia,” the state witness informed the court presided over by magistrate Buba Jawo.

Ms. Manneh was represented by Lamin Jobarteh whilst the state was represented by Emmanuel Fagbenle and the case resumes May 4.
