Today heralded the day that Jose Baez took control of the reins in the Casey Anthony trial. The prosecution has rested their case. Now it was time for Baez to come out ‘swinging’.
In his opening statement he spun an interesting story. It was full of vitriol and venom. He assured the jury that he would show them the truth! This truth included sexual abuse by father George Anthony and possibly also by Casey’s brother Lee Anthony. The ‘morally corrupt’ meter reader Roy Kronk also was a key player, Mr. Baez entreated.
It sounded good.
The question I have been asking myself was how would Jose Baez come bursting out of the starting blocks? There was no obvious starting point, and my guess was that neither did he.
Today saw a BOMBSHELL turn into a soggy firework that would not ignite.
Having teased the jury with salacious stories they were ready and able to hear the defense Jose Baez started off with a yawner of a day. As I suspected, his only real opening move was to attack the ‘junk science’. How well did he do? Of course I am not part of the jury, so I have no idea what they made of today’s spectacle, personally I viewed it as another attempt by the defense to throw mud balls at the wall and hope that something sticks.
It was curious to read what other trial watchers made of today’s events. Some analysts claimed Baez did quite well. According to Hal Boedeker of the Orlando Sentinel:
WESH’s Bob Kealing said that Baez “slowly made his points†by stressing holes in the state’s forensics case. WESH legal analyst Richard Hornsby also said Baez did “very well†in showing that a top FBI lab had contaminated a piece of evidence even when following the protocols.
I personally disagree, I thought it was a very ho hum day for the Casey Anthony defense team.
One also has to bear in mind that an Opening Statement is some what akin to a advert on TV for an upcoming movie. A 90 second preview of a 90 minute epic. How many times have you seen these ads and been disappointed with the movie? Is that what we have here? Is Jose Baez selling us a dud?
Jan brought up an interesting comment, today is June/16. You can read her thoughts here.
It is ironic, the 16th of June is a date that has great significance to me from my early years. In my mind it was always the Glorious 16th.
Will Jose Baez hold good on this Opening Statement? Will he put Casey Anthony on the stand?

On a lighter note. An author friend of mine Gaston Delesdandroux has been following this trial for some time. He has put me in the awkward position of having one paperback and two Kindle versions of his new book An Americans Story to give away to readers of BNN that are following this case.
So here is the deal, the first three people that can tell me why I say the Glorious 16 of June, win.

For me it is the day before my birthday June 17th. Flag day and Fathers day also fall close to this date.jmo
So here’s my thought on Baez’s strategy. I think he potentially has only one good card that he thinks might convince a jury of reasonable doubt. I think he is playing off all the “questionable” defense questions first and then will finish off with his finale, or proverbial “ace in the hole.”
Of course, I really don’t think he has SQUAT, but I think HE THINKS he has an ACE high.
I just looked it up and it was Sussex day, I understand now, wishing you a very happy day Simon. Bet you wished you were fishing and enjoying the day in Sussex, it sounds like a wonderful community.
Baez had a very slow start today. Iam not up in arms about his expert on no DNA found. She was only testing for blood.JA I believe took back the reins at the end of that 3.5 hours DT questioning in 2 minutes. Baez had a couple of good moments but I dont think he drew any reasonable doubt with the jurors.I believe it was Vass that explained the conditions as to why there would have been no DNA in the decopositon fluids when the State had him on the stand.jmo
I am still waiting for him to prove his opening statement!jmo
this is what i believe baez ace in the whole could be. just my own opinion,
remember the 17 yr olds who found a stick with a string attached to it? and remember how they said they dug and came upon what they thought was a bomb and called police? remember all that? well if one goes back and watches the boys interviews on t.v it clearly shows that the spot that this digging took place is the same spot where little caylee was found. so if a search was done and a look alike bomb was found, why wasnt little caylee found in the process?
and one more ace i think he has is that lee will testify that he did in fact mess with casey, or that he had seen george.
now here’s my question. we had heard so much from richard grund about his son jesse, if jesse knew so much more than anyone else (supposedly) on casey, why didnt the prosecution call him as a witness.
didnt richard and jesse grund lawyer up? and if so why? i seem to remember some of the defense claims on this or that, but wasnt the prosecution more for calling jesse?
praying for justice for caylee.
I hope everyone just caught that this entomologist said that HE was called on DECEMBER 11, 2008 by Linda Kenny Baden. It was not announced that the remains that were found on DECEMBER 11,2008 were Caylee until DECEMBER 18th,2008.jmo
JUSTICE FOR CAYLEE
Looking, we caught it and are hoping that the prosecution did too. Some are saying that he was called though at that time only because it was a possibility that Caylee had been found, but why would he fly there on Decemer 13, 2008 which was before the body was identified.
Jan Barrett
EXACTLY! Jan. HINKY to me!
Big question is why is this guy from a state unlike Florida? His experience is in a differing climate, now his experiment was done in the fall in a northern climate and with a large pig, not enclosed in 3 bags. And in a stationary place, his car was not changing location with the air on etc.
If I were on the jury and heavy set I would have taken his comment, about the pig being more like some humans than others, as a slam. jmo
Go Jeff Ashton!!!!!!! Love the cross examination
Just saw Spitz on the stand. What a clown. Is he just plain crazy or a judicial whore who just loves the limelight and says whatever the client asks for? Ashton does a superb job of grinding down these clowns.
What a total disaster this Baez show.
stratosg, ITA!
Baez is in a world of trouble right now, which does not suprise me at all.
I think JA is a superb Prosecutor. He comes prepared and knows how to extract the info out of these people.I also believe Spitz likes the high profile cases. He is the one that kept bringing it up so JA called him out on it. JMO
