Zogby: Only Muslims Should Criticize Muslims

In Friday's Huffington Post, James Zogby joins the attack on the Pope's speech that quoted Emperor Manual II Paleologos of the Byzantine Empire. The "offensive" quotation was:

"Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

Zogby's main theme is rather confused. He starts out by criticizing the Pope for not heeding Jesus' injunction to "remove the beam from your own eye" first, before trying to "remove the splinter from your neighbor's eye;" a reference to Christian crimes committed during the Crusades and the Inquisition. Then, however, Zogby adds his own criticism of Islam:

"Listening to or reading the poisonous utterances of bin Laden, al Zawahiri and Zarqawi or any of those who are being called 'al Qaeda's second generation'," he says, "makes it clear that there is a problem that Muslims must address."

Oddly enough, Zogby never seriously takes the Muslims to task for not effectively addressing that "problem," nor does he state that because the Muslims did not keep 'their own house in order' thousands of people have died unnecessarily -- many of them Muslims.

In a "Note" during his criticism of Pope Benedict XVI Zogby states: "This is all especially troubling to me because I am Catholic and have PhD in Islamic Studies." What he does not specifically mention is that he is also the President of the Arab American Institute and that he is a professional activist for Arab causes; that information is in his biography and his biography is linked to this article but it would have been an important clarification for the reader who was unfamiliar with his activism or his opposition to anything that benefits Israel.

Zogby continues by heaping criticism on Pat Robertson, Israel's Rabbi Oveida (whom he calls a "racist ideologue") and President Bush; they are all demagogs according to Zogby, because they warn the public of the threat of unchecked Islamic terrorism. Apparently, Zogby feels that the only ones (aside from himself) who can legitimately criticize the jihaddist tactics of the radical fundamentalist Muslims, are other Muslims.

Fair enough, but the problem is, the Muslim world speaks of the threat, when it speaks of it at all, in 'whispers' when it should not only be 'shouting' but actually doing something constructive to rid itself of the menacing terrorist mentality that infects its religion.

An effective rebuttal to Zogby's line of reasoning can also be found at Daniel Pipes' website, written by Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum, a pro-American think tank.
