Why Turks Initiated the Muslim Anger at Pope Bendict's speech Turkey has been trying very hard to get into EU for so many years. While the Western Europeans have admitted most of former communist countries into EU as member states, they have been dragging their feet on Turkey's admission to the EU. This has been a thorn in the relationship between the Western Europe and Turkey. The century old animosities between muslim invaders Turks) and the Ottoman empire is still on their minds. They are unable to loosen their shackles of ancient history. This prevents Europeans from accepting a muslim country as a member of European union. They are clear and unequivocal about it. The only Western country that supports membership of Turkey into the EU is our United States. Pope Benedict is not a suave and smart as his predecessor. He lacks clarity and has no vision regarding the future of Christianity. But he believes strengthening Christianity in Europe will ward off Islamic influence in Europe. Millions of by poor North Africans who are predominantly muslims are fleeing their country and flocking at the borders of Southern Europe(Spain, Italy) and this creates a tremendous tension between the local population and immigrants. Muslims are not treated well and they are persecuted just like the Jews who were persecuted for centuries in Europe. The lack of tolerance and inability of Europeans to integrate the muslim community into their society creates tremendous social tension. Even if Pope had nothing good to say about Islam he could have avoided talking about the subject. We can give him the benefit of the doubt. But making unnecessary comments without thinking about repurcussions is not good for a leader of 1.1 billion catholics. But as for the reaction of the muslims , it goes without saying that they act irrational.
