Wal*Mart moves the market

If there was any doubt to the economic power of Wal Mart, events in the marketplace today leave no doubt. The Bentonville, AR firm's announcement of discount drug plans moved drug retail stocks deep into the red zone.

CVS, Walgreen, and, to a lesser extent, RiteAid, were moved lower. The broader resale structure of the drug market was also impacted, with health delivery companies feeling the presence of the 800-lb gorilla to potentially squeeze their profit margins.

Those who might think the reaction is overdone may do well to remember the havoc let loose on retail competitors such as K-Mart and Caldors. Wal Mart is already one of the largest competitors in the local pharmacy market.

Wal Mart has done what the Federal Government would not, and should not do: twist the arm of the drug industry and make them say "Uncle Sam." Except this Sam is enshrined in Arkansas, not in Washington.
