Wal-Mart to Sell Prescription Drugs Cheap The retail giant is also increasing benefits for its employees, as in the past it’s been accused of setting its compensation so that associates can still, just barely, receive government benefits. That latter assertion has always fascinated me, as the plan is as sinister as it is ingenious. Sinister because the costs of health care are socialized while Wal-Mart keeps the profits gained from the employees’ work. Ingenious because it saves the company money, keeps the employees taken care of and points out the fundamental flaw in welfare: Paying people to be poor encourages poverty.
