Viacom's MTV Steps Further Into Video Game Industry According to IGN.com: "In a marriage between two companies which made their names bringing music to television screens, Viacom-owned MTV Networks will acquire Guitar Hero developer Harmonix for $175 million in cash, the media giant announced today." Reuters reports: "Viacom, which earlier this month named Philippe Dauman as its Chief Executive after Tom Freston's surprise departure, is aiming to focus more on digital media. With the Harmonix deal, Viacom will have spent at least $577 million on video game acquisitions this year, including $200 million for Atom Entertainment in August and $102 million for Xfire in May." From a New York Times report: "The goals of the deal, which is to be announced today, are broader than putting the MTV logo on a Harmonix game box: for instance, the company wants to offer visitors to its Web sites, its new virtual worlds and its planned mobile services the ability to play along with, or remix, their favorite songs. “It is about people coming to MTV who are passionate about music and wanting to interact on deeper and deeper levels,” said Christina Norman, the president of MTV. “It’s not just about wearing the T-shirt.” Blogger News Network is advertiser-supported, and your visits to our advertisers help BNN to meet its expenses.
