Vatican Sending Envoys to Muslim States to Explain Pope's Remarks

Call it the Vatican's Islamic Derriere-kissing World Tour of 2006. And if they're not careful it could become a bad habit, sort of like Cher's perpetual farewell tours.

But at least Cher's audiences love her. The audiences for this ill-advised Vatican tour, however, will be a bit more hostile in that they believe that the pope, all Vatican officials, all Catholics and, in fact, all non-Muslim infidel dogs deserve to be beheaded and to rot in hell for all eternity. How in the world do you wow an audience like that?

The answer is, you don't. So why put themselves through this humiliating kabuki dance to begin with? If Muslim fanatics the world over want to riot, burn churches and shoot nuns in the back, they'll find a justification. They've done it all before over far less than the pope's recent "offending" remarks and they'll do it again in the future.

As for the offending remarks themselves, the pope and the Vatican should be standing foursquare behind them since, you know, they happen to be true. Pope Benedict, in a lecture to a German university, was quoting a 14th century Byzantine emperor who had basically said that forcibly spreading a religious faith through violence was immoral and contrary to God's nature. That Byzantine emperor also happened to toss out the name "Muhammad" as an example of someone who had done just that, which was also mentioned in the pope's remarks.

Judging by the reaction it got, he might as well have flushed a copy of the Koran down a large commode and beamed the images worldwide via satellite. But of course, what he said in his remarks was totally justified and should, in fact, be preached to the high heavens.

If the Vatican feels it has to send representatives out to go on a tour of Islamic backwaters and fever swamps, it ought to be for the purpose of informing them that they are the real infidels and that the rest of the world is tired of their crap. It should not be to prostrate themselves before mobs of irrational and violent primitives.

Unfortunately, we all know which it will end up being closer to.
