U.S Spinach banned in Canada A deadly strain of E. coli, 0157:H7, which originated in farms in California, had lead to the death of three people across U.S and has infected another 166. The Canadian food agency has placed a complete ban on all spinach from United States. The ban would affect the spinach growers in the U.S, who are already been hit badly with the retailers in Canada stopping purchase of U.S spinach. The deadly strain has already spread to 25 states and officials who are probing the source of this deadly strain, said that they have found a ‘situation of concern’ in some farms in California and have cleared the spinach grown in other areas across the nation. E. coli is a harmless bacterium that lives in lower intestine of mammals. This species of bacteria is widely used in agriculture, medicine and genetics .The deadly strain of E. coli 0157:H7 was first identified in the year 1982, and is known to cause around 66 deaths every year in the United States.
