Tying Down Bermuda What was once the sixth tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Florence, is now packing sustained winds of over 75 mph which gives her Category 1 hurricane status. As Florence makes her way toward the tiny British territory of Bermuda the 65,000 residents of the island were put on notice to tie down anything that could fly away, put up their storm shutters, stock-up on food and water supplies, get their boats out of the water and, it was stressed, they should stay home after the storm has passed so official vehicles can have the roadways to themselves . . . if Florence doesn't change course. Changing course is still a possibility but not one you'd want to bet your yacht on. Many residents remember when Hurricane Fabian (a Category 3 hurricane) came to visit just three years ago, causing lots of property damage and killing four people. Official weather service estimates predict that Florence will either hit or nearly miss the island sometime Monday morning. On early Sunday morning when Florence was declared a hurricane it was still 360 miles south of Bermuda, moving northwest at 13 mph. There are, of course, tourists on the island and there they will stay; Bermuda International Airport, the only airport on the island, stopped operations late Saturday night. Some tourists don't mind at all, they came to Bermuda in the last 24 to 48 hours just to be there when the hurricane hits -- what a great photo op!
