Toshiba recalls Sony batteries

Toshiba is recalling 340,000 laptop batteries because of defects that cause them to run out of power prematurely. The problem is not related to the overheating problems that caused Dell laptops to explode in flames.

There was no word from Toshiba on how many users had reported problems with the batteries. This is still bad news for Sony, whose battery production has caused problems for Dell, HP, and Apple. Sony is struggling against giants like Microsoft, Apple, and Samsung for market share in the consumer-electronics industry, where profit-margins are often razor-thin.

Lithium, an alkali metal that is a primary component of many rechargeable batteries, is caustic and burns easily. As shown here, the flames from a burning battery can be sudden and intense. Lithium-ion batteries are used in music players, cell phones, laptops, and video equipment.
