Tokyo Rose: The Final Irony

It has long been a feature of war culture that any person who actively works propaganda against the official governement position is perilously close to treason. Jane Fonda still tops many lists of most hated anti-patriot for her actions during the Vietnam War which, in the eyes of many people, gave "aid and comfort" to the enemy at worst and at the very least provided them a high profile celebrity to parade around proclaiming the injustice of the U.S. cause and the justice of the Vietnamese cause. Propaganda is that powerful.
World War II was a heavily propagandized war. Feeding off the violent poster images from World War I there were many campaigns meant to demonize the enemy and stir up blind hatred towards them. These attempts were frighteningly successful. Books have been written that paint a convincing portrait of the war in the Pacific as a race war. Not everyone is convinced the Japanese soldiers all intended or wanted to die holding those islands but instead were killed due to the racism instilled into our soldiers during the training and through wartime media portrayals.
Of course, the U.S. was hardly the only nation involved in propaganda. Tokyo Rose was one of the more famous voices filling the airwaves. Her propaganda was obvious, deliberate, and according to many reports, very amusing to many U.S. servicemen. It also cut right to the heart of the volksgeist of "what it meant to be an American". Much like the Nuremburg Trials, guilt or innocence were not going to be as important as seeing SOMEONE pay the price.
Iva Toguri paid the price. She paid a heavy price. Her reputation was destroyed, her family destroyed, her life irrevocably altered. In this very friendly article it is reported her basic goodness in turning the other cheek and not reproaching others even after the devastation it caused to her and her loved ones.
The article is a valuable read that does an excellent job of showing that Toguri was NOT Toky Rose. It shows the damage done to her, including imprisonment, divorce, and more because of the unfair and inaccurate portrayal and prosecution of her as Tokyo Rose. Then it concludes with this line:
"Iva Toguri, the wartime “Tokyo Rose” of legend, was born on July 4, 1916. She died on September 26, 2006, aged 90."
Even after passing she cannot remain unsullied by even her defenders. Propaganda continues to do the only thing it can...harm.
