Tales of Mozart & The Always Aggrieved

Fear Of Offending Moslems Spurs Hot Debate in Europe

Well, it would be about time, then, wouldn’t it? It is kind of darkly amusing that it is the cancellation of four opera performances that is kicking off the debate… sort of that “Hey, wait just a dad-gummed minute?!” reaction among artists and intellectuals that seemed to be so lacking among their peers in the news business as regards the Affair of the Danish Cartoons. Our life peers and perfumed princes in the newspaper biz seemed to practically elbow each other out of the way in their rush not to offend tender Moslem sensibilities, and prate about their responsibilities… er, wait, these were the same sort who are always insisting on the public’s right to know and the courage and fine judgment needed to uphold same.

On the other hand, the bit of stage business in the cancelled performance of Mozart’s’ Idomeneo that brought this whole thing on sounds like another one of those trendoid attempts to stick it to the bourgeoisie one more time. Well, I’ll give them props, for having the guts to even consider sticking it to one element of the bourgeoisie who has demonstrated a depressingly consistent tendency to stick it back… behead it, burn it down and blow it up, in addition. And at least the very real question of self-censorship in the face of the terminally and violently aggrieved is at least being raised, instead of swept under the rug… again.
