Surveillance: Right or........left? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060817/ap_on_go_pr_wh/warrantless_surveillance Ohhhh....so this is so journalists, scholars, and lawyers can do their jobs. Well, now it all makes sense! After all....we all know that 80% 0f the American Work-Force is made up of journalists, scholars, and lawyers. Hell, there would'nt even BE an America without those guys! It's so good to know that all the Republican Stormtroopers whose only jobs were to listen in on all my phone conversations about what I needed to pick up at the grocery store, and what movies I wanted to catch on the weekend, can now get REAL jobs, like journalists or "scholars". I was beginning to feel so violated everytime I picked up the phone that I was strongly considering Morse-Code as my only option anymore. I wasn't really worried about any so-called "Terrorist" plots being thwarted anyway. Everybody knows that "Terrorism" only exsists in "other" countries, and even then it's only exploited by Flag-Waving, Red-Necks who just want another excuse to shoot more "brown people". Besides, if the New York subway gets gassed, or the Golden Gate Bridge gets blown up, I know that there will be a plethora of Journalists who will be there to cover the stories, a heard of lawyers standing in line waiting to defend the rights of the "alleged" terrorists who were "simply expressing their feelings" about America's Imperialistic nature, and a gaggle of scholars who wil forever tell the stories of George Bush's "EVIL Empire" and it's horrifying effects on everyday, American society. Their jobs at doing so will now be MUCH easier than ever before, and that's what's most comforting to me. [This broadcast was brought to you by Sarcasm, Inc.] Now, all of this brings to mind a famous quote that liberals LOVE to use in regards to this very subject matter; "If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy."- James Madison It's a good, well-thought out quote, and I hope to Dear God that "guise of fighting" is the ONLY kind of fighting that ever takes place on American soil ever again! Yet, it is a statement FAR removed from a nation that would eventually see it's own civil war, 2 World Wars, Pearl Harbor, and September 11, 2001. Ironically, Madison resided at a time when Napolean was invading every nation within "invadable" distance. France, being a nation (along with Britain) that was at odds with the new America, created much strife through constant seizures of American cargo ships and impressment of sailors. In an attempt to gain cooperation from said nations, Madison and his administraition backed the Embargo Act, in which (through various ammendments) prohibited all trade between America and Britian and France. Needless to say, that the attempt to utilize economic preasure to bring about a desired change in America's favor, only succeeded in creating America's very first Depression. As with present-day Democrats, the Federalist party continued to protested a war, so much that it even threatened to seceed from the Union. Ultimately, James Madison was forced to ask Congress to declare war with the British in 1812. I don't know at what point in Madison's life did he pen the above quote, but I would be hard pressed to believe it was well BEFORE the White House and Capitol Building were set afire from British Invaders. Never the less, the Federalist party was the only real casualty of that war, and now can only be seen in history books. For all the people of all the other nations in the history of the world that have ever been opressed, invaded, and/or taken-over by TRUE Imperialists, they would have to argue that fighting an ACTUAL foreign enemy is a devastating reality. "This Land" is no more immune to that than any other one. Our placement on the map is the ONLY factor that's played on our side for so long. Pearl Harbor and Sept. 11th should've reminded us of what most of the rest of the world is like, but I'm afraid nothing can penetrate the ignorance of a society that values it's coffee more than it's oil, and it's celebrities more than it's elected officials. It's a sad by-product of a society residing in a land that has not even seen the likes of real suffereing and oppression for over 140 years. A land where the ACLU will always be there to defend the rights of the minority of the population, while the very things that the majority voted for get crushed in the process. That's TRUE democracy, man! Maybe someday, we'll be lucky enough to have a government like the one in Congo. Where every month, someone else has a new idea, and gets a shot. (Or, "gets shot"....I may have gotten that mixed up.) I'm no patriot in the sense that I would never say that America is the ONLY "great" nation in the world, because I can name more than a few that I consider to be equally "great". The definition of "Great" in reference to a nation is simply one that does not deny it's people their basic rights/necessities. (Food, water, shelter, protection from foreign threat(s), and a healthy economy.) Everything else, as with the granting of said rights/necessities without having to "earn" them (See also: Welfare), is only a beacon of how great a nation CAN be, without HAVING to be. For anybody to convince me that America is an "oppressive" nation, you'll need a FAR stronger argument than telling me that someone may be secretly listening to my phone conversations. When my job starts paying me in I.O.U.'s, or whan I have to stand in line for 8 hours for a loaf of bread...THEN we'll talk. If surveillance was so "tyrannic", then I can only imagine how opressed some people must feel whenever they walk into a department store. Now, THAT's scary!
