Success? I'll Drink to That...

Alcohol brings forth interesting dichotomies in modern society. On the one hand, there is currently a hard driving campaign against drunk driving. Commercial after commercial hits the airwaves talking about how to improve safety cops are cracking down on those who drive under the influence of alcohol. There is also a battle brewing over whether or not to standardize the blood alcohol content level that represents the influence when driving. Underage drinking continues to be a large problem and numerous studies have been done showing who is drinking and why.
Into this maelstrom of anti-alcohol rhetoric comes a fascinating study that says drinking is good for your career. Not so much the alcohol portion...but the networking that goes on around alcohol.
If this is indeed an accurate study it is a sad day for American corporations. Encouraging the use of alcohol, a substance that has been responsible for many, many bad things happening but not too many good ones, is hardly the type of thing that seems like a positive business step. Everyone knows inebriation leads to poor choices so expecting it to improve business decisions seems extremely curious.
The socializing and networking seem like positive steps. Building camaraderie adds to team chemistry and that is, indeed a helpful thing. It just seems like there might be a better way to build those contacts than going out to get drunk.
