"A new race to space is on, I plan to spend the next several years creating the possibility that anyone who wants to go to space will be able to, safely and affordably." This was the statement given to Reuters by the California based Jim Benson, founder of space hardware company SpaceDev and now founder of Benson Space Company. Benson is well aware that he is facing an uphill battle. He has already raised $1 million towards research and development but he plans on working on that figure some more and try to increase that by $50 million. His plans are not the only ones in the world though as his announcement comes right on the heels of the announcement from Sir Richard Branson that he already has planes capable of taking tourists and passengers into space designed. Benson, on the other hand, has something that Branson does not. Benson’s company was the one that supplied the rockets for SpaceShipOne, the rocket ship funded by Seattle billionaire Paul Allen and designed by aerospace designer Burt Rutan, managed to barely touch outer space two years ago with a passenger on board and land safely.
