Space junk, weather delays Atlantis return

A mysterious object floated past shuttle Atlantis after thrusters fired this morning. The object, sighted by a camera in the shuttle's cargo bay, floated past the shuttle in the same orbit.

NASA officials are worried that the object may have shaken loose from the shuttle. Mission Control decided to take an extra day in orbit, to complete a photographic survey for possible damage. It is not certain if the object came from the shuttle, passed by, or may have actually struck the shuttle.

Weather had already figured into a possible delay. Discovery of the mystery object sealed the decision to delay landing. To pass the time, shuttle astronauts joked that it was getting crowded in orbit.

The shuttle program has been plagued with loss of the Challenger and Columbia vehicles. Since the Columbia broke up in re-entry, NASA has put extensive safety procedures in place.
