Source of contaminated spinach sought

Federal health officials are still trying to pinpoint the exact farm(s) that produced the spinach that has sparked an outbreak of E.coli in the US. So far over 100 people have been sickened and at least one has died. E.coli can manifest as a bout of diarrhea, which can be mild or severe depending on the individual, so it's quite possible that many more people have been affected without realizing it.

The company that produces much of the packaged fresh spinach sold in the US -- ironically named Natural Selection -- claims that its organic spinach is not implicated, but recalls still stand on all of its products. Federal authorities are advising consumers not to eat any fresh spinach at all until further notice. It's important to note that washing the spinach will not remove contamination; boiling it is probably safe.

Some consumers are avoiding all packaged greens for the moment, although there's no evidence that lettuce (or anything else aside from spinach) is implicated.

If and when the farm(s) responsible for the contamination is (are) identified, they are undoubtedly in for some pretty harsh scrutiny of their growing and processing practices.
