Sony cuts PlayStation price -- in Japan

Sony recently announced a cut in its Japan PlayStation 3 price. There are no plans to cut prices elsewhere -- unfortunately, as the console is set to retail in the U.S. at $500 to $600 depending on the size of its hard drive.

Though Nintendo fell behind with the lukewarm reception to its GameCube (targeted toward younger kids until company managers eventually saw the light, released more adult titles and saw a decent rebound), I have to say it's the only company of the three that constantly seeks to set itself apart. The Wii, despite its terrible name, was the first system announced to have motion-sensor controllers. Also, Nintendo is actively targeting "lapsed gamers" with affordable, intuitive gameplay as the other companies keep going after hard-core gamers by increasing graphics, plot complexity and price to absurd levels.
