Somalia: Hardly a Peaceful Moment

Latest reports say that 11people were killed in two car bomb explosions outside the seat of Somalia's practically impotent interim government in Baidoa, Somalia. The bombs are being considered an assassination attempt on President Abdullahi Yusuf, the head of Somalia's two-year-old interim government. A government spokesman, Abdirahman Dinari, said that President Yusuf escaped injury from the blasts, but Yusuf's brother was reportedly killed.

In 1991 the national government of the African nation of Somalia, controlled by dictator Siad Barre, collapsed in an Islamic uprising. Mogadishu, the country's capital, was all but abandoned to gangs of rival Islamic warlords and a new government was born in Baidoa -- now the only town that has any government control. The only entity that has some measure of control in the rest of Somalia right now appears to be the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) movement. The UIC has partial control of Mogadishu and most of southern Somalia and the form of Islamic "justice" known as sharia, complete with public beatings and executions, has come to Somalia with the UIC.

This past August, President Yusuf declared his cabinet to be ineffective and new ministers were named. Talks to approve the new ministers and discussion on how to work with the UIC, and perhaps share power with it, were underway this morning when the bombs went off.

The immediate cause of the assassination attempt seems to be President Yusuf's decision to ask that foreign (African) peace keepers be sent to Somalia. This has infuriated the Islamists who have vowed to wage a "holy war" on the peace keepers.

Al Queda is, of course, behind the unrest in Somalia and that is substantiated by Osama bin Laden himself who has said that Somalia is another battleground in his war on the United States.

Two things:

One: This is NOT the Somali government here. This is a puppet regime set up basically by the european imperialists to regain control of this part of Afrika, now that they sense an opportunity. And they have help here from various local comprador forces who are long bought and paid-for. The Yanquis themselves are only along for the ride -- and only as long as they can't figure out a way to screw all the other parties, and take over things completely. Thus their dirty deals with the warlords behind the europeans' backs -- screwing everything up, in their usual, arrogant style.

Two: Anyone who thinx bin Laden is behind everything here is someone absolutely not to be listened-to. This is the way only the truly deluded -- and pro-U.S. -- can think. Whoever is behind this attempt in Baidoa, they are only one of many actors, coming in from all angles. Somalia is a free-for-all now, in full motion.

Only the pro-imperialist or foolish would be rooting for this phony "government" to take over the country. May it be quickly put out of its misery, and the Somali people make their OWN future -- independently of imperial intrigues. If that means their having an "unacceptable" islamic government-- who are these pompous twits of the West to demand otherwise?

Comandante,

I appreciate your insight (or at least your opinion) about what is "really" going on in Somalia.

Some comments from my "Yanqui" perspective:

Someone, other than the Islamic forces, needs to "gain control" of that part of Africa, not for the imperialist's sake but for the people's sake. I dread the thought of anyone living under the harsh and uncivilized rule of sharia -- this is not arrogance, this is compassion.

My opinion only!
