Shinzo Abe New Japanese PM

Nationalist candidate Shinzo Abe won the race for Japan's ruling party leader on Wednesday, which makes him the prime minister of Japan next week. The son of a foreign minister and grandson of a prime minister, Abe proclaimed that he is pro - economic reforms and wanted to make Tokyo a world leader. He also pledged to keep Japan in the international fight against terrorism.

Incidentally Abe also favors a hard line against North Korea and tighter military cooperation with top ally the United States. He would be Japan's youngest postwar prime minister. He wants to revise the pacifist Constitution of Japan and to give the military more freedom of action. He also advocates revision of school syllabi and promote patriotism in the schools. He is bent upon distancing Tokyo from its post-1945 war guilt. He has however not cast much light on his financial policies.

Japanese pacifists say Abe's attitudes border on the dangerous. But for supporters, he represents a Japan that can stand up to other nations after decades of turning the other cheek.
