Saddam Thrown Out of Court

After Chief Judge Abdullah al-Amiri was dismissed from the Saddam Hussein trial, he was replaced by Judge Mohammed Oreibi al-Khalifa, much to the dismay of Saddam and his attorneys. The Iraqi government demanded that Abdullah al-Amiri be removed for his statement saying that Hussein was not a dictator.

Hussein's attorneys condemned that change and walked out of the coutroom in protest, stating that they felt al-Khalifa would be impartial to the defense they presented. Hussein, himself, stayed in the courtroom to openly. "We believe the judiciary does not enjoy the independence required. The decision is against the main principles governing the independence and integrity of the judiciary."

Judge al-Khalifa then took control of the coutroom, ordering that Hussein be removed. "Take him out," Al-Khalefa said. "Get out."

After Hussein was removed, the judge resumed the session, calling Ismat Abdel-Qadir, a 74 year0old Kurish woman to take the stand. She went on to detail a 1987 attack on Sowsinan, her northern village.
