Rosh Hashana Begins This Weekend "This weekend marks the beginning of the most sacred period of the year in Judaism. Rosh Hashana, the first day of the Jewish new year, began Friday evening. The holiday also represents the beginning of a stretch of time -- known as the Days of Awe or the 10 Days of Repentance -- between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. In this holy period the Jewish people repent, asking forgiveness for their sins and resolving to move forward and away from sin." RGJ.com reports: "The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana, began Friday evening. Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting and contemplation, began Friday evening, too. It will be three decades before this convergence happens again. Ramadan is the name of the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Religious observances occur throughout this entire month. During Ramadan, Muslims are also expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam by refraining from violence, anger, envy, greed, lust, sexual intercourse, angry and sarcastic retorts, and gossip. People are meant to try to get along with one another better than they normally might. Purity of both thought and action is important." Uh-huh, yep... we'll just see how well that works out.
