Rodriguez y Orejuela Guilty Pleas "Final, Fatal Blow" To Cali Cartel, Says Alberto Gonzales According to a Reuters report: "I have admitted all the charges and I am willingly submitting myself to American justice," Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela said. His brother apologized to his family and asked their forgiveness for the suffering he had caused them. "I would also like to offer my apologies to the people of the United States," he said. The Rodriguez Orejuelas founded the Cali Cartel in the Colombian city of that name and acknowledged shipping hundreds of tons of cocaine to the United States from 1990 through 2002. The U.S. government agreed not to charge six of their relatives with money laundering and obstructing justice. The government also agreed to remove 28 family members from a list of people blocked by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control from engaging in financial transactions." "The brothers' guilty pleas effectively signals the final, fatal blow to the powerful Cali cartel," Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said at a Washington news conference, as reported by the Associated Press in a story published in the Houston Chronicle. "This is a day of pride for the people of Colombia and for international law enforcement." Lets just hope that Colombians, who put their lives on the line and have lots of widows and orphans due to the war against drugs get to keep this money and not the U.S government that doesn't do much to fight consumption.
