Religious Freedom in the World Today

When the U.S. released a report on violations of religious freedom oour gaze spanned the globe. We peeked in on Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Unsurprisingly, we found lots of places where religious freedom is seriously restricted. We should have looked a little closer to home.
This country has become seriously anti-religious. Somewhere along the line we ignored the actual wording and intent of the Constitution (no law regarding the free exercise) in favor of letters written by Thomas Jefferson after the turn of the 19th century. The doctrine of separation of church and state is found nowhere in the text of the Constitution itself, nor was it ever intended in the ways people have been interpreting it more and more often since the middle of the 20th Century.
Look at Congress itself: the sessions are opened with a prayer. That practice was established with the inception of the Constitution. In fact, the Constitutional Convention to replace the inadequate and ineffective Articles of Confederation was on the verge of breaking up in failure when it was suggested the guidance of God be sought. After the prayer the tone of the meetings changed and one of the greatest documents in history was written.
Contrast that attitude with the move today to remove all signs of God from schools, courts, legislative arenas, and anywhere else. The idea that church must not interact with state is ridiculous and offensive but because believers have stood by silently while unbelievers have chattered loud and long we have lost the freedoms we once enjoyed.
To be sure the U.S. is still a haven of religious freedom and tolerance in comparison to most of the world but in comparison to what we once had it is a shell of the freedom we once held. We have let that happen through ignorance of our history and unwillingness to actually read the document we claim to hold so dear. It is time for the believers to take back our country and stop the abuses of the atheists and agnostics. Whether they wish to hear it or not this is a country founded by believers and for believers and it is the era when we need to let our voices ring out in opposition to the removal of our heritage and rights.
