The Reggie Bush Investigation A NCAA By-law states that “Student-athletes, their family or friends cannot receive benefits or loans from agents.” The rules may say this, but reality says that the second these gifted athletes (most coming from a less than stable financial background) sign the Letter of Intent to attend high-profile schools such as USC, Notre Dame or UCLA, the financial benefits the school receives for the next two, maybe three years dwarfs the $100,000 allegedly received by Bush and his family. The colleges receive a financial windfall, while the athlete generating the income is held to strict standards. Where are the victims here? The agents choose the life they lead, The NCAA continues to sit on its perch, lording over what amounts to a multi-million dollar athlete factory, while Reggie Bush and family reap the rewards of a professional lifestyle. It’s time for the NCAA and the nations colleges to work together and find a way to adopt guidelines distinguishing the student-athlete, the young man or woman who uses college athletics as a way to earn their degree, from the elite athlete, the man or woman who packs the stadiums as well as the university coffers, and act accordingly.
