Reactions to the Death of Ann Richards Ann Richards stood out as a figurehead from this time. She has garnered compliments from politicians across the country, Republicans and Democrats alike, and these comments show a more genuine depth than the typical niceties dolled out after a death. "Ann loved Texas, and Texans loved her." - President George W. Bush. Ann was "the epitome of Texas politics: a figure larger than life who had a gift for captivating the public with her great wit. She was an endearing and enduring figure in Texas politics.” - Texas Gov. Rick Perry. "She was a Texas good ol' girl. There was a spirit of bipartisanship in Austin when she was governor. Whether people voted for her or not, Texas will feel a loss because she was such a character." - Houston Mayor Bill White "With a sense of humor and a love of Texas, Ann Richards led our state through a time of economic growth, prosperity and opportunity for all. She gave Texas a lot, but perhaps her greatest gift was to help us all laugh at ourselves." - U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Texas. "Like Texas, she was bigger than life." - U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas. Regardless of which side of the aisle they end up on, it seems that our country could use more politicians poured from the same mold as Ann Richards.
