Pope Benedict The new Pope seems to have hit a nerve in the Middle East, but just a few months ago some simple cartoons did the same thing. You remember those, the Mohammad cartoons, they had portions of the region going up in flames. Now here comes the Pope, and he has the audacity to say something less than glorious about Islam. The outcry, once again, is vehement enough that you might think he told a 'Yo Momma' joke that struck too close to home. During a visit to Germany, the Pope gave a speech which made several mentions of jihad and holy wars. He also quoted a 14th century Byzentine Emperor, who wrote [700 years ago] that Everything Mohammad brought was evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached. Any argument there? Does not the Koran teach conversion to Islam by all necessary means? Pope Benedict was trying to emphasis the falacy of using violence to spread religion, something Christianity came to grips with after the Crusades. The Muslim mantra, 'Death to the Infidels', is right out of the dark ages, and doesn't have me asking "Where do I sign up?" Having a sabre rattled over my noggin, and being threatened with beheading, could, in certain circumstances, get me to convert, but it probably won't make me a true believer. I'm guessing that's the mindset that the Pope was trying to point out. For Islam to move into the future, the radical clerics have to come to terms with what the human species is all about. Repression doesn't factor into the mix. Sentencing women to death, for the crime of adultery, when in fact they were raped, isn't a very good fit in modern society. Jihad, in the name of Allah, murdering those who don't 'believe', won't get you into heaven, no matter who wrote the book. I'm not an overly religious person, but I do give this Pope credit, it seems that he calls 'em like he sees 'em, and that's always been good enough for me. While no christian prophet is credited with the notion, the religious power men, who started the Dark Ages by burning Romes libraries and forbiding the teaching of reading to anyone but them, built the church and spread their reign through the use of the stake, the human fuel and the element of fire.
And this was just the first 400 years, before the crusades I believe.
And who said that Christian history was all peaches and cream? A quick peek at the Inquisition will speak for that. The point is, Christian churches, for the most part, have evolved, and take a more realistic approach to the sanctity of life. It seems Islam, unfortunately, has not.
