Political Struggle Over How Detainees Will Be Handled Continues

According to a report in the LA Times:

"A Republican-controlled Senate committee dealt a blow to President Bush's national security agenda Thursday, approving a bill that would expand the legal rights of terrorism detainees.

The rebuke capped a day of bruising political combat in which Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) released a letter from Colin L. Powell, the president's former secretary of State, opposing Bush's proposal to allow more extreme methods of interrogation.

"The world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism," Powell said, adding that Bush's proposal "would put our own troops at risk."

US News and World Report says:

"...CIA Director Michael Hayden signaled that he may be flexible despite his extensive lobbying efforts on behalf of the president.

Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham have said that Hayden told them that Bush's proposed legislation is essential to allow the CIA to resume its recently revealed overseas prison program for terrorist detainees.

But Hayden, in a message to the CIA workforce yesterday, appeared to allow room for a compromise on the hotly debated question of how to define U.S. responsibilities under the Geneva Conventions for treatment of terrorist suspects."

Reuters reports:

"President George W. Bush pledged on Friday to try to work with rebellious members of the U.S. Congress over the treatment of foreign terrorism suspects but warned "time is running out" to pass legislation."

As I read the various reports, I find the language used a bit disturbing. The word 'rebellious', for example. Those Republicans are not rebelling, they are doing exactly what they are supposed to do -- give serious consideration to the weighty matters at hand, debating and discussing, not just blindly following the party line. I appreciate that they are thinking things through carefully and presenting a variety of thoughts and ideas, as that is how better decisions are made, by considering a variety of options and working together to craft the best possible policies.
