Physicists over a barrel on strings

So is String Theory really science? Some in the scientific community have scoffed at it, claiming it to be a mere philosophical exercise. Lacking a single provable, testable prediction, they point out, makes String Theory mere silly string.

The idea that reality is made up of little noodles of energy, bouncing at different rates to create light, gravity, and nuclear force is at the center of the latest existential crisis in physics. There are actually arguments over whether the noodles are actually loops, and whether they bounce back and forth or ripple up and down.

Quantum physics, which famously prompted Einstein to declare that "God does not play dice," at least gave us the transistor and the LCD. String theory, so far as anyone can tell, has not led to any concrete progress. And theory without progress is merely speculation, as it is claimed in two new books reviewed here.
