Perhaps We Should Thank Abu al-Masri Now some few pages of the Assessment have been declassified by the administration and, sure enough, the New York Times' information was basically correct . . . terrorism is on the rise since the U.S. went into Iraq. The surprising thing is that anyone thought this was news. In a closely related event yesterday, the new leader of al Qeida in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri posted a verbal message through the media. He announced that 4,000 jihadists have been killed in Iraq since the U.S. Invasion three years ago -- that was the good news; the bad news is, he posted a verbal help wanted ad at the same time. Al-Masri is recruiting scientists, chemists and explosives experts who are wiling and able to create some new, more deadly weapons for al Quida's arsenal. "We are in dire need of you," he said in the recording, "The field of jihad can satisfy your scientific ambitions, and the large American (military) bases are good places to test your unconventional weapons, whether biological or dirty, as they call them." Also in the recording, al-Masri encouraged like-minded jihadists to kidnap Americans and Europeans so he has some bodies to trade for the release of Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, the blind,Egyptian cleric who is in jail after his conviction for his role in the plots to assassinate the President of Egypt and blow up the World Trade Center in 1993. Perhaps we should thank Abu Ayyub al-Masri for his message . . . his candid warning . . . because the threats he makes cannot help but wake up at least some of the Europeans and Americans who believe that the threat of terrorism is not real or those that believe that "leaving them alone" will make us safer. Terrorism didn't start when we ventured into Iraq and it won't stop when we finally rid Iraq of the bloody days and nights that the terrorists revel in. There always have been and there always will be those twisted souls who have an idea and who are so consumed by that idea that they will happily kill those who do not subscribe to it. We can never hope to rid the world of terrorists, we can only continue trying, politically and militarily, to reduce their numbers.
