Not To Be Outdone, Target To Offer Low Cost Generic Prescriptions, Too

Wal-Mart threw down the gauntlet and, nationwide, drug store chains trembled. Target, however, has stepped up to the challenge and has made public the intent to match Wal-Mart's prescription prices.

While it is nearly certain that Wal-mart's plan has little to do with altruistic sentiments, and much more to do with the loss-leader strategy of sales that attracts us coin conscious shoppers to one store or another, hopefully to pick up other items with a profit margin as we buy our loss-leaders, it looks like it will benefit the consumer -- for now -- as other big chains, like Target, are lured into reducing their prices, as well.

Wal-Mart's motivation really doesn't concern me too much, to tell the truth. It is doing its job, making money. That's what it is supposed to do, not serve as a social service organization, contrary to what the many Wal-Mart haters out there seem to think. If, while doing its job, it helps to bring the price down on prescription medications essential to the health of so many and pushes others to do the same in order to compete, then as far as I'm concerned, that's a good karma way to earn their profit.
