Nanotechnology gets under your skin Normally, cosmetics are applied at the surface of the skin and have a limited absorption rate due to the large size of natural particles. Packaging moisturizers in micro-spheres made with nanotechnology allows the active ingredients to pass through the outer layers of skin, delivering fullness and eliminating wrinkles. The idea of wrinkle cream that actually works is alluring to consumers and marketers alike. While the cosmetic industry says such creams are safe and effective, they admit that the long term health risks of the new technology are unknown. Beauty products are extensively tested and regulated, but cosmetics are not considered drugs and are governed by the Federal Trade Commission, not the Food and Drug Administration. The same sort of attention that is given to SPF 500 sunscreen would be unthinkably lax for say, Vioxx. Researchers say that getting under your skin is not far removed from getting into your bloodstream. Featured on Nightly Business Report here. Background here.
