The NAACP; Oft a fount of bigotry For example, Texas candidate Kinky Friedman used an objectionable word. The NAACP complained. Good, they are right to do so. Or, they would be...if they objected every time it was used. The word is no more acceptable in the context of a movie about "the Hood" than it is in a comedy session...and no less acceptable. If it is good for the goose it is good for the gander. Changing who said a word does not change the meaning of the word. Jackie Chan in Rumble in the Bronx used the same word, echoing verbatim what another individual had just said. This led to an extended fight scene. Some people laughed, some complained...and lots of people missed the point. As with any word, it is the speakers and listeners who ascribe meaning to it. Spoken words are arbitrary meanings assigned to arbitrary assemblages of letters and sounds. Saying something is offensive when I say it but not when you say it makes no sense and is itself completely arbitrary. Of course, in this situation it is even more bizarre. Keeping on top of current events, the objectionable material was spoken during a comedy routine....in 1980.
