MS Says Me Too! to Social Networking All that sets it apart is that it may be exclusive. There are two barriers to entry. One, you have to be invited. Right now, you can get an invite by sending an email, but eventually they expect friends to invite friends to invite friends (similar to Friendster's old model). The other barrier is cost. They plan to have users pay for custom graphics and other little things costing between 99 cents and four dollars. The problem with these ideas are that a) invites aren't exclusive (see Gmail) and b) nobody on the internet pays for things that are legally (and in many cases, illegally) free elsewhere. Facebook was the only networking site with true exclusivity built in. Wallop may hope to capitalize on Facebook's recent privacy stumble, but new privacy controls should placate most invested users. Plus, like Orkut, Wallop isn't a good social networking name. Orkut is Google's social networking site and you’ve probably never heard of it. It’s still only popular where it started, South America. Without a good name and little new to offer, Wallop doesn't stand much chance in the already bloated social networking field.
