More Gifts To US Poor From Presidente Chavez

CBS News reports that "the Venezuelan president was at a Harlem church Thursday, making good on a pledge to help low-income families in New York purchase deeply discounted oil. According to the report, "Citgo Petroleum, the U.S. subsidiary of Venezuela's state oil company, has earmarked 25 million gallons of discounted fuel for low-income New Yorkers this year." According to WNBC.com, "this year, the Venezuelan government intends to expand this program throughout New York City, reaching more needy families than ever before."

Last year, I paid more than my rent to heat my two bedroom flat through the winter. Each month. Every month, including short February. Let me tell you, it was not easy. I, as a single parent, live far from a luxurious life, if you measure by money and things, though if you measure by time and pleasure, I am, indeed, wealthy. In fact, I -- by choice, as I prefer to stay home to raise my children -- do without what much of America finds essential, such as cable TV, a car (cabs and bus cost me a great deal less per year than auto fuel, upkeep, and insurance), and the like. However, to pay more for heat than I do rent... that seems crazily out of balance to me. So, I'm quite sure that the poor of New York appreciate very much the discounted fuel offered by President Chavez. Though, I'm not at all surprised to hear that there are many who do not. And, I'm sure that few of those live with the day-to-day struggles that many of those in Harlem and numerous other places throughout the United States do.
