Low Literacy Test Results In New York

Recent results of a state wide testing system in New York are in and the results show that from grades 5 and up, the percentage of students who are able to read at their own grade level are taking a dramatic drop. By the time a New York student is in grade 8, less than half of them are able to read at their grade level. The testing was also able to find that while performances in private and higher class areas of the state was still disproportionately higher than in inner urban areas of the state, the drop off in literacy rates among children in the 5th to 8th grades was remarkably poor and disturbing. The testing was conducted to comply with the ‘No Child Left Behind’ act which is requiring the state to meet the goal of 100% proficiency from students across all fields in math and reading or 80% proficiency from students that do not have special needs.
